This unpleasant sensation can be a symptom of dehydration. So today we are going to focus on how to caring for dehydrated skin and to provide a solution to this uncomfortable problem.

The skin becomes dehydrated when the body loses more water than it takes in. Dehydration is also linked to the loss of mineral salts or electrolytes of the body. Every day our bodies excrete about two litres of water and this fluid needs to be replenished.

In addition, most reactions occur in an aqueous environment. It is therefore important to maintain stable fluid levels inside the cells and in the bloodstream. In addition, severe dehydration can alter the thickness of the blood and make menstruation more painful or even change its frequency.

But let's focus on the skin. The entire human body, with the exception of the epidermis, is made up of about 60 % of water. The epidermis, on the other hand, contains 20 to 30 % of water, and its outermost layer contains 20 to 30 % of water. stratum corneum (a wall that prevents evaporation), has 10 to 20 %. If the percentage of the stratum corneum is lower than these figures the skin is dehydrated.

Our skin is our own first barrier to combat external agents. And it doesn't matter if you have oily skin, dry or combination skin, you are always vulnerable to dehydration. In that case, the skin's appearance becomes dull, rough, cracked and rougher to the touch.

Do you know what causes your skin to become dehydrated? We'll tell you below :-)

Causes of skin dehydration

The thirst is a a sign that the body needs a water supply that balances the loss. However, we do not always perceive this signal clearly. If you are very focused on an activity, if you are under stress or if you are travelling, the body turns its attention elsewhere. We forget to drink water and other physiological needs because the signal is masked by urgencies that hijack our attention. Some people even confuse thirst with hunger or the need for certain foods rich in liquids: watermelon, soups...

Mild dehydration is a common occurrence and we can recover from it easily. However, the dehydration that is reflected in the skin is usually moderate or severe. Some of its causes are:

SweatingThis is the most common and frequent cause of dehydration. Days at the beach with sunbathing, running a marathon, intense physical exercise for more than an hour, hiking in hot weather and many other activities trigger heavy sweating.

External actorsIn the winter the skin tends to dry out more in the cold. Hygiene products containing surfactants, air pollution with hydrocarbons, heating and air conditioning, hair removal treatments with acids, etc. also dry out the skin...

Excess urinePeople suffering from diseases that increase the frequency of urination should pay close attention to the volume of water they consume. Diuretic drugs also cause us to lose more urine than normal.

FeversFever increases the body temperature and the body requires more fluids to maintain its functions. On the other hand, fever makes us sweat. This is the body's mechanism to lower the temperature a little, as the sweat on the skin cools it down.

VomitingThis is another way to lose water in our body quickly. Not only gastric juices are lost, but also other substances in our digestive system that maintain the water balance.

DiarrhoeaWhen we have eaten food containing bacteria, viruses or parasites that our body does not know how to deal with, we often suffer from diarrhoea and this causes significant water loss.

BurnsBurns leave the layers of the skin in a critical state. Whether by sunburn, fire or contact with high-temperature surfaces, damage to the epidermis - and sometimes to inner layers - is very painful. Burns cause extensive fluid loss through the damaged skin. Tissues broken in the open air lose by evaporation and by contact with absorbent tissues (bandages, clothes...).

Signs of dehydration

According to experts, mild dehydration produces signs such as thirst (the basic alert), headache, muscle weakness, tiredness, dizziness and lethargy.

The symptoms of moderate dehydration are slightly different. You experience dry mouth, discomfort when swallowing saliva, low urine volume, heaviness in the limbs, a rapid heartbeat and lack of skin elasticity.

Finally, severe dehydration is a life-threatening medical emergency if left untreated. It is characterised by extreme thirst, absence of urine, accelerated breathing, altered mental status (difficulty in thinking, recognising objects and others, inability to calculate), cold and ashen skin. In addition, the skin does not recover easily if we pinch or press on it.

Care for dehydrated skin

Once the cause of the dehydration has been identified, the following should be applied specific care. The basic and universal advice is to drink more water and other electrolyte-containing drinks.

People with atopic dermatitis or ichthyosis tend to have drier skin. This dryness is caused by abnormalities in lipid and protein metabolism. In this case, special creams recommended by a dermatologist are necessary.

If you have a dry skin current, you must find moisturising creams and emollients containing argan oil, hyaluronic acid, collagen, vitamins, lecithins, glycerine and honey.
