Curly hair has very special characteristics, and not knowing them makes it difficult for us to take proper care of our hair, which can result in dry, dull, frizzy and unshaped curls.
To help you get to know your hair, here are 5 things that will help you take care of it the way it deserves, and get your curls back.

1. Why does curly hair tend to be dry?

There are different reasons that can cause your hair to dry out:

  • Physiological. Curly hair is naturally drier. In the scalp area there are sebaceous glands that produce natural oils that glide through the hair strands, moisturising the hair. In the case of straight hair, it is very easy to slide from the roots to the ends, but in the case of curly hair it will be more complicated due to its helical shape, finding dry hair especially from the middle to the ends.
  • Use of hair dryers and irons. Heat damages the cuticles making the hair lose its shine and break more easily.
  • Dyeing and colouring. Due to its action, hair fibres can become permanently weakened and flaky.
  • Use of hair products that accentuate dryness. They usually contain ingredients such as sulphates, phthalates, waxes, silicones, salts, alcohols and mineral oils, which are not recommended for the care of curly hair.

2. What signs in your hair tell you that it needs a specific routine?

  • Dry or very dry hair
  • The hair does not absorb the products you apply, such as masks and conditioners.
  • Frizz
  • Dull hair
  • Breaks more easily
  • Rough to the touch
  • Feeling of heaviness in the hair
  • Lack of curl definition

3. How can I restore the shine?

Whether hair shines depends on the condition of the cuticle (surface layer of the hair). If the cuticle is closed, light will reflect off it and we will see shiny hair. If, on the other hand, the cuticle is open, there will be no reflection and the hair will appear dull.
The use of hair products with silicone or waxes also affects the shine, as they envelop the hair and absorb the light, without allowing it to reflect, so it does not shine.

How do we bring back the shine?

  • Providing the hydration your hair needs
  • Protecting it from aggressive heat sources (hair dryers and irons).
  • Avoiding ingredients that are not recommended (sulphates, phthalates, waxes, silicones, salts, alcohols and mineral oils).

4. What can I do to make my hair curlier?

First of all we want to clarify that there are different types of curls, and that, if your hair is wavy, you are not going to get it to curl like afro hair unless you apply a treatment (they are usually aggressive), but once it grows back it will be the same as before.
What you can do is make your natural curls the way they should be - more flexible, beautiful, soft and shiny - by taking care of them the way they deserve to be.

That said, here are a few tips to help you make your curls fall in love:

  • Do not use heavy products, as they prevent the curl from being flexible and therefore smoothen it.
  • Avoid using hair dryers or straighteners, the mixture of contact and heat will cause your hair to frizz, losing the curl and looking like a mess.
  • Be careful with the ingredients, it is important to avoid those that are not recommended for curly hair, in this way you will help not to eliminate the hair's own oils, preventing it from drying out and the roots from becoming greasy.
  • Nourishment, make sure you moisturise your hair properly. Because of its curly shape, it is more difficult for the natural oils secreted by the scalp to reach the ends, so your hair needs a little extra.
  • Brush the hair with a wide-toothed comb to prevent breakage and deformation of the curl.
  • Dry it lovingly, patting it dry, without rubbing the towel.
  • If you apply any cosmetics, do so in the shape of the curl and with fluffiness, so as not to flatten or straighten the hair.
