Most people associate spots with skin that has not been cared for and also as a sign of skin ageing. They can be uncomfortable and even embarrassing, especially in cases where the extent of the hyperpigmentation is greater, as is the case with hormonal spots. You can try to camouflage them with make-up or concealers, but in the end the problem is still there.
In this post we tell you everything you need to know about blemishes, from their appearance to how to treat them for healthy, beautiful and even skin.

We have worked hand in hand with our expert to be able to answer all questions in an easy and understandable, yet technical and professional way.

Here we go!

What are the spots?

Skin blemishes are changes in the colour of a specific area of the skin. They can occur all over the body, but the ones that most often cause concern are those that appear on the facial area.

what are the stains

There are different types of stains:

  • Solar lentigines:small, rounded, flat, symmetrical spots that appear in areas exposed to the sun, as they are due to the effect of UV radiation. It is normal for them to appear after the age of 35, when the skin loses its capacity for regeneration.
  • Senile lentigo:with the passage of time, the number of melanocytes (cells responsible for forming melanin) decreases, but those that remain increase in size and their distribution can become more focused, leading to the accumulation of melanin and therefore to spots. This type of spots affects 90% of white people over the age of 50.
  • Melasma:hyperpigmentation: this is a type of hyperpigmentation especially linked to hormonal changes in women, such as during and after pregnancy. They are usually large, symmetrical, dark spots on the forehead, cheeks and/or upper lip area.
  • Skin lesions:when skin tissue is damaged, an excessive amount of melanin can accumulate in one area. This excess melanin remains after the blemishes have healed and leaves its mark on the skin. Dark-skinned people are often more affected by hyperpigmentation marks as skin pigmentation is more intense in this darker skin.

How are they produced?

Skin spots appear when there is a malfunction in the melaninformation process, and its distribution is not evenly spread across the skin's surface, causing an abnormal accumulation of this dark substance.

Don't you know what melanin is?
The melanin is the natural pigment that determines skin colour, which is secreted by the body to protect the skin from UV rays, leading to tanning when it is evenly distributed or to spots when it malfunctions causing hyperpigmentation (dark spots on the skin) or depigmentation of the skin (white spots on the skin).

Types of aggressions that alter melanin production:

  • High sun exposure (causes solar lentigines)
  • Age (causes senile lentigo)
  • hormonal changes such as pregnancy (causes melasma)
  • Skin lesions such as scars or marks due to acne.

Stain formation process

process of formation of a skin blemish

Pigmentation in the skin is the result of a complex process involving four stages:

  • Ultraviolet rays, hormonal changes, age, etc. produce a stress in the keratinocytes (predominant cells of the epidermis) which send a signal to the melanocytes (melanin producers) to produce more melanin for protection.
  • Melanin is produced in excess by melanocytes.
  • Excess melanin diffuses through the layers of the epidermis in an irregular manner.
  • It reaches the most superficial layers forming spots or hyperpigmentations.

How can we treat spots?

We can stop their process and eliminate them at different levels of their production.

  1. By preventing the excess melanin produced from reaching the upper layers of the skin (which forms the blemish).
  2. By blocking excess melanin production, protecting the skin to prevent aggressions and stress from activating melanin production.

For this, we can count on different active ingredients that block the process of stain formation by attacking at different stages.

NIACINAMIDE

Also known as vitamin B3, is a water-soluble vitamin with a low molecular weight, which makes it penetrate very well into the skin and also favours the penetration of the other active ingredients.
Niacinamide has very good skin tolerance, which makes it ideal for all skin types, sensitive, reactive, dry and even acne-prone skin.

Effects on the skin:

  • Depigmentingreduces stains of all kinds.
  • Soothing and anti-inflammatory, ideal for skin disorders with inflammation.
  • Reduces residual acne marks and has sebum-regulating properties.
  • Reduces the irritationand facial redness.
  • Powerful antioxidant, it prevents free radicals from damaging cells and prevents premature skin ageing.
  • It improves the barrier function of the skin, because it stimulates the production of ceramides, which are essential substances for the integrity of the lipid mantle, therefore, it will be more protected against external aggressions.
  • Increases the production of collagen, improving wrinkles and skin texture.

How it acts against stains:
Niacinamide acts on 2 levels.

niacinamide action

1.- Acts on the deepest layer of the epidermis (basal layer) preventing melanin that has formed in the melanocytes from moving up to the upper layers of the skin and forming new spots.
It works on the superficial layers of the skin, evening out the tone and lightening existing blemishes.

Complete, isn't it? ;)

SYMBRIGHT

It is a natural active bio-ferment of Salvia Sclarea.

Effects on the skin:

  • Protector 360º that prevents and protects against external aggressions (UV, IR, HEV, Pollution), inhibits melanin synthesis and reduces blemishes.
  • Evens skin tone.
  • Increases the luminosity of the skin.

How it acts against stains:
Symbright acts in two phases of stain formation.

symbright action

1.- In the middle layer of the epidermis, inhibits the signal sent by the keratinocytes to the melanocytes, preventing the production of melanin.
2.- On a superficial level, it is a powerful anti-inflammatory that helps to repair blemishes caused by skin lesions.

PANTHENOL

It is a derivative of Vitamin B5. Due to its low molecular weight, it is able to penetrate the epidermis and reach the deepest layers of the skin.

Effects on the skin:

- Regenerate: promotes skin regeneration processes (cell proliferation) facilitating skin renewal and helping to eliminate superficial blemishes.
- Repairs: restores the skin's natural barrier, increasing the production of ceramides (the skin's natural cement) and protecting it from external aggressions.
- Soothing: relieves sensations of itching, irritation and redness.
- Moisturiser:prevents transdermal water loss by retaining it in the skin.

anti-stain panthenol action

How it acts against stains:
Panthenol acts on the outermost layer of the skin.
Thanks to its high power of cell regeneration, it accelerates the epithelisation process (formation of new skin), eliminating existing blemishes more quickly.
